Enhancing ESG initiatives with air-to-water technology

As a global manufacturer of protective paints and coatings, Jotun is applying innovative ideas and a far-sighted vision to reach its environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals and safeguard valuable resources around the world.

The need

In 2021, the World Coatings Council and its members, including Jotun, created a global foundation for sustainability programming in the paint and coatings industry. Among different sustainability initiatives like factory design, manufacturing processes, water reuse and recycling, water efficiency is considered a focus for achieving bold sustainability goals.

Jotun has made significant investments in sustainability programs and initiatives over the last few years, lowering its operations’ carbon footprint by 21%, enhancing electrical efficiency by 16% and raising the amount of waste recycled to 61%. Now, Jotun also needed to evaluate water usage across its entire value chain, identifying important areas for conservation to align with global ESG efforts.

Challenges

  • Identifying opportunities for water conservation across its entire operation and supply chain
  • Replacing 78,000 plastic water dispensers with a more sustainable solution
  • Finding a renewable water source that could scale from an initial pilot project to large-scale volumes of water once needed

The solution

In line with Dubai Can, a sustainability initiative by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Jotun UAE partnered with A1RWATER to adopt air-to-water technology in 2023. The pilot program began with five A1RWATER dispenser/generators, which convert air moisture into pure drinking water.

Jotun aims to scale up these efforts, replacing 78,000 plastic water dispensers across offices and operations over time. Not only does this accelerate Jotun’s progress towards its water conservation goals, it also eliminates the need for plastic in the organisation, further contributing to the company’s waste reduction.

“Water saving practices need to be adopted by companies and communities, and it is essential to educate individuals about conserving water and preventing pollution,” said Sachin S Shetty, Jotun’s HSE Manager.

Impact

In just one year, Jotun UAE has already produced nearly 50,000 litres of air water, avoiding the use of more than 92,000 plastic water bottles and reducing approximately 8.4 tons of carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) with A1RWATER generators. Imagine what’s possible as they continue to scale these efforts.
